About Berat
Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Albania's most beautiful and historic cities. Known as the "City of a Thousand Windows" due to its unique Ottoman-era architecture, Berat features white Ottoman houses that climb the hillside, creating a stunning visual spectacle.
The city has been continuously inhabited for over 2,400 years, making it one of Albania's oldest cities. Berat's historic quarters—Mangalem, Gorica, and Kala (the castle)—represent different periods of the city's rich history, from Illyrian times through the Byzantine and Ottoman empires.

Key Attractions
Berat Castle (Kala)
One of Albania's largest and oldest castles, still inhabited today! Inside the castle walls, you'll find Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques, traditional houses, and the Onufri Museum. The castle offers panoramic views of Berat and the Osum River valley.
Onufri Museum
Located inside Berat Castle, this museum houses an impressive collection of icons painted by the famous 16th-century Albanian master iconographer, Onufri. His use of vibrant red pigments made his work distinctive and highly valued.
Mangalem Quarter
The historic Muslim quarter on the left bank of the Osum River, featuring traditional Ottoman houses with large windows. This area is best viewed from across the river, where you can see the famous "thousand windows" that give Berat its nickname.
Gorica Quarter
The Christian quarter on the right bank, connected to Mangalem by the Gorica Bridge. This area also features beautiful traditional houses and offers excellent views of the Mangalem quarter across the river.
Gorica Bridge
A beautiful stone bridge spanning the Osum River, originally built in 1780. It connects the Gorica and Mangalem quarters and is one of Berat's most photographed landmarks, especially beautiful at sunset.
Ethnographic Museum
Housed in a beautiful traditional 18th-century house, this museum showcases Albanian life from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building itself is an excellent example of Berat's traditional architecture.
King Mosque (Xhamia e Mbretit)
Built in the 15th century, this is one of the oldest mosques in Albania. Located in the castle, it features beautiful Ottoman architecture and is an important historical and religious site.
Holy Trinity Church
Located within the castle walls, this Byzantine church dates back to the 13th-14th centuries and contains beautiful frescoes. It's one of several historic churches within the castle complex.

Travel Tips
- Getting There: Berat is about 120 km (2 hours) from Tirana by car or bus. The drive offers beautiful scenery through Albanian countryside. Buses run regularly from Tirana's main bus station.
- Getting Around: Berat is very walkable. The historic quarters are best explored on foot. Wear comfortable shoes as you'll be walking on cobblestone streets and climbing to the castle.
- Best Time to Visit: Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant weather. Summer can be hot, especially when climbing to the castle. Winter is mild but can be rainy.
- Castle Visit: Plan 2-3 hours to explore the castle properly. The walk up is moderate but worth it. Bring water, especially in summer. The castle is still inhabited, so be respectful of residents' privacy.
- Photography: The best views of the "thousand windows" are from across the Osum River, particularly from the Gorica side. Sunset provides beautiful lighting for photography.
- Accommodation: Consider staying in a traditional guesthouse within the old town for an authentic experience. Many offer beautiful views and traditional architecture.
- Local Crafts: Berat is known for traditional crafts. Look for handmade items, local wines, and traditional foods as souvenirs. The old bazaar area has several shops selling local products.
